Garage Storage Tips – Keeping your Tools Safe and your Garage Clutter Free

Is your garage a dumping ground for bikes, tools and the lawnmower? We give you some tips for storing everything you need in your garage to keep it clutter free.

How do you use your garage?

Most of us don’t use our garages for storing cars these days. The speed of life and the size of modern cars, means that we often don’t have time to put the car away at night, as our grandfathers did, maybe with a quick polish down with a shammy leather too. At the same time, most garages just weren’t built for the sheer size of the average modern family car, let alone those Chelsea Tractors!

For many of us, though, the car won’t get into the garage simply because the garage has become a dumping ground of tools, garden equipment, children’s bikes and items that should have been taken to the council tip months ago.

To help you organise your garage a little better, here’s a few tips on the best way to increase your storage space.

1. Adjustable Shelving

Adjustable shelving can provide an excellent solution storing just about anything you need to store. Adjustable shelving offers a systems of flexible and expandable shelves that allow you to move shelves around to accommodate larger items or purchase additional shelves to meet your needs.

Freestanding shelving units with doors can be more expensive, but will reduce visual clutter considerably, and make a great home for cleaning supplies, gardening chemicals and other items you don’t want the children, or the pets to get into.

2. Pegboards

Another staple of garage storage is the pegboard. Smaller items and tools are perfect for storing on a pegboard. By turning one wall into a pegboard and placing hooks as need, you can create an organised system where everything has a place.

There are also special stronger wall storage solutions for larger, unwieldy items such as bicycles, garden forks or spades, or even that rarely used pair of skis!

3. Plastic Bins

Not just for the rubbish or recycling, cheap plastic bins are great for creating storage. If you have small objects, items with odd shapes, or tools that are difficult to hang on a pegboard, a system of bins is another way to stay organised.

Be careful though, make sure you label each bin, and remember which one really is the rubbish bin. It’s easy for items to become mixed up and messy, and you don’t want to spend all your time rummaging through bins to find the tools you need. For smaller items, such as nails and screws, labelled jam jars make the ideal storage solution.

4. Create your very own workshop

It is the dream of many hobbyists to have a workshop in their garage. Whether you want a potting table, art studio or woodworking station, it’s important to organise your garage to give you the space to be creative.

A heavy-duty workbench with a heavy top and built in drawers and shelves is the ultimate workmate. But a simple table top will do very well, and you can always add more storage later. Give yourself plenty of room to work, and make sure the lighting is powerful enough to allow you to do what you need. Modern LED lighting is bright, efficient and cheap to run.

Don’t forget your electrical power supply, either. Long extension cords running everywhere are potentially hazardous if connected to high use equipment like drills, saws or fan heaters. If in doubt, call an electrician, who will quickly solve the problem for you.

5. Protect your hard work and your investment

Whether your car is in your garage or not, it’s likely that you have hundreds of pounds worth of tools and gear in your garage. In some cases, your garage might also offer private entry into your home.

For these reasons, you should consider protecting your property with a roller shutter door. Roller shutter doors offer protection for your valuables and can be powder coated in a variety of colours and wood effects to match your house and home design.

Having an organised garage will help you feel more productive and may even inspire you to crack on with those hobbies or home projects you’ve never got round to completing. It might seem like a daunting endeavour, but you can quickly create a clean tidy space that will make a big difference to your home life.
